Storm Dennis waving down local store income by 15%

Storm Dennis hit the entire North East with strong winds around 70 mph after a yellow warning from the Met Office.

A road flooded in York after the effect of Storm Dennis

The flood, the weather, everything is so bad, I begin to think this is never going to end. I just hope everything will be over soon.

George Days, Local resident, York

The financial impact of Storm Ciara and Dennis has hit small businesses worse than ever. The stores which remained undamaged from the flood have their income reduced by 15% compare to this time last year.

The severe weather brought heavy rain and strong winds to England and Wales, which led to record high river levels and flooded hundreds of properties.

According to the Guardian, Storm Dennis has swept an estimated cost of £225m in insurance claims, and Storm Ciara is expected to cost around £200m, which bring the total lost to £425m.

Many business have not survived through this, but a very fortunate nail salon owner who would not like to be filmed manage to get away with the flood. She described the experience as horror like relive from the movie, the water just keep coming into the town and get trapped inside.

It was very scary, all the water are trapped in the city nowhere to go, I can see other shops going down in water. I was lucky tho, just managed to get away.

Kiera Sherman, Nail Salon owner, York

While the business has managed to avoid the flood, the estimated damage, income and others costs for the nail salon is close to £7,000, which only partially can be retained from the insurance.

Strong wind at NorthEast sea side, Tynemouth

On the other side of the North-East, Tynemouth, things were looking a little bit of better. The coastline residents admits that the storm is not as bad here as the rest of the country, as they have not experience any flood.

I mean, it is not that bad here, just the wind and the wave, kept me and my kids up all night.

Steven Butler, local resident at Tynemouth

Employee at Tynemouth local fish shack described their experiences working by the coast as scary, as the wave would come close to the edge of the store. It appears to be the UK mainland has been harder from the storm than the coastline.

Storm Caria, Dennis and Jorge have already caused the wettest February month UK on record with a UK average of 202.1mm.

UK Met Office is seeing another very strong jet stream high in the atmosphere, this could mean another storm may be on its way.
